As an artist-in-the-making, I find myself going through an ongoing metamorphosis. It is a never-ending process that allows human beings to experience vital stages and phases as we go through life and during which we seem to gather the necessary “pieces” to better understand our selves and the world around us. I strongly believe that we, men and women, are the most amazing and awesome creatures to have ever been designed and created, all modesty aside. In this case, the beautiful, organic, graceful lines that a woman’s body exhibits and her sweet and delicate presence have certainly inspired me to render this image. The colors that I have chosen also relate to the natural change of seasons and how Mother Nature reminds us of the magical journey we all make through life. This painting also tells of how we transition from one stage into another, accumulating experiences and vital “pieces” along the way so necessary to put our own “puzzle” together.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. "I grew up in Colombia, South America, and in a culture that celebrates and glorifies bullfighting, among many other things. A violent yet seemingly graceful encounter between two strangers and between two magnificent species who, for a few precious minutes, pretend to casually cross each other’s paths and engage in a dance of life and death. In it, the precise maneuvers and the graceful, daring moves executed by the Matador create a convincing mask of the violent ritual between Torero (bullfighter) and Toro (bull), and where an elegant yet bloody flamencoesque duel of life and death is played out as artful, for-the-sake-of-tradition entertainment. "Bullfighting is, without a doubt, primitive and brutal. I believe it to be a senseless, inhumane and completely unnecessary tradition to preserve as long as we continue to kill both, the bull and our own belief in possessing a humane regard for animals. This painting, on the contrary, celebrates the colors and the graceful movement displayed by the protagonists of the tragic spectacle. It also celebrates the dynamic interaction between man and beast and the alchemy of courage, instincts, audacity, gracefulness and luck thrown together as a form of entertainment. But this painting is NOT about crowds of people cheering on and applauding to the systematic and gradual torture of a beautiful animal. It is NOT about people who subconsciously choose to freeze-frame daily reality for a few hours, in order to rejoice in the killing of a live animal. The Squareness of Tradition is a pictorial statement against the seemingly blind attitude that our society adopts when it comes to “legalized” violence and graphic brutality of both animals and human beings, during a public spectacle that borders into circus-ring entertainment disguised as “Tradicion Taurina.” "It is true: LIFE is inherently violent. The birth of a child is both beautiful and simultaneously violent and bloody. Lovemaking, in its purely physical state is, while sensual, wonderful and divine, a violent act. And although I find many aspects of bullfighting fascinating, the Squareness of Tradition relates to the pre-imposed notions, not just in bullfighting but in many more rituals and practices set by societies around the world that condone violence in the name of tradition. So much information and age-old customs have been carefully “packaged” and meticulously sub-planted in the human psyche and into our lifestyles that we rarely stop to think and to react beyond what’s expected of us. "In bullfighting, the animal is nothing but a completely innocent creature whose role is merely to provide entertainment while being provoked, butchered and tortured to death. In life, we are born innocent creatures into a world with pre-set notions, concepts and traditions that we are expected to learn and follow while becoming automatons that simply must accept “reality” as we are taught to know it. "What I have painted here, then, becomes an open invitation addressed to all aficionados of bullfighting around the world: become aware and be proactive; question everything; agitate the foundation of social traditions; challenge the system and the status quo in the hope that we all can one day break through the limits and the pre-imposed norms that are masked and established as so called “traditions.”" -- Mauricio Arcesio</image:caption>

It always amazes me how aromas and scents, flavors and textures found in the food and drinks that we consume can evoke moods, a certain attitude, a timeless memory and all those delicious pleasures that human nature always surrenders to. I was born in Colombia, a beautiful country where some of the finest coffee beans in the world are grown and harvested. This painting is the first of a series of images inspired by coffee and its effect, literally and culturally, on our lifestyles. Based on memories from my childhood, life-long observations and on growing up in a land where drinking coffee has been a daily ritual and a national past time for so many generations, my intention is to create images that celebrate every aspect of coffee growing, harvesting roasting and drinking. And about age-old socio-cultural rituals. I am also interested in all the different and multiple ways in which human beings connect and communicate with each other, consciously or not. The coffee bean then becomes a means and one of nature’s multiple gifts, by which so many of us ultimately end up, consciously or not, communicating with each other. People from all walks of life participate, again consciously or not, in an amazing cycle that links many aspects of human inter action and connectedness. From the time that the coffee bean seed is planted, carefully nurtured and grown, to the moment when it’s picked, then shipped, roasted, sold and eventually consumed by us, we all become the fabric with which a bio-socio-cultural quilt is created.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. Agitate, agitate, agitate !! This painting was inspired by my unconditional respect and admiration of the people of Colombia in South America, and their unfortunate plight. Therefore, it is dedicated to Colombia, the Colombian people, their infinite potential and their life-long dream for peace and normalcy in their lives. The composition here is one of hope, encouragement and an open invitation to Colombian people living inside and outside Colombia to shake and destroy the foundation of a terrible system - or way of life - that are in complete chaos and which have corrupted, intimidated and drastically changed every aspect of life in one of the most beautiful and naturally-abundant (nature-rich) countries in the world. A 38-year-old civil war and senseless internal conflicts that generate violence, lawlessness, disregard for human life - especially innocent children and hard-working civilians - have infected and spread like a disease throughout Colombian society, becoming a runaway train that seemingly has no destination and that has brought a nation to its knees pleading for mercy and begging for something, anything to stop a vicious, illogical and very unnecessary cycle of self-destruction. You may notice that there are dozens of birds or bird-like figures throughout the painting. Each bird symbolizes a human being whose birth-right is to be free, to never be oppressed and to always have the freedom to live peacefully and in harmony (unison) with its fellow human beings and in reverence of its environment. The light source and its majestic beam in this painting represent hope, good will, vision and faith in the inherent capacity that all human beings have - regardless of political inclinations, economical conditions, race, religion or philosophical beliefs - to reason, to work out their differences and points of view and their ability to reach a mutually productive, beneficial and peaceful understanding of our place and purpose in this fragile and beautiful universe that we call home.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. A few years ago I got a phone call from a good friend of mine whom I had not heard from in a long time. I had just returned home from a long journey overseas, so it was good to talk to her again. After catching up with each other’s doings and life’s happenings, she then went on to tell me that she had recently found out that she was pregnant and was then expecting her third child. At that time, she was already divorced and had been dating someone mainly to hang out with and not feel so lonely. With two kids at home and the prospect of living as a single parent, she had not had time to see or meet new people, go out, etc. I asked who the would-be father was and whether this had been planned or just an "accident." She told me that she didn’t feel anything special for him nor did she have a meaningful relationship with this man and that she didn’t want, at any cost, to have the baby. I simply told her that whatever decision she made - whether to keep the child and bring a new life into the world or to have an abortion - I would support her 100%, and that she would still be the same, good old friend to me regardless of the outcome and her decision. Two weeks went by and I got another phone call. She had thought about it, had spoken with two girlfriends close to her and also with her mother. Her decision was final and she would have an abortion. She gave me a date and the clinic where the outpatient procedure would take place. The would-be father was committed to accompanying her and would also pay for all the costs. I wished her well and we both promised each other to keep in touch more often. It just so happened that on the day she was to have the abortion, I was in my studio ready to start work on a new painting. For some reason, I then remembered that, at that precise time, my girlfriend would be admitted to a clinic. I knew that she would be ok and would deal with the aftermath in the best of terms. My thoughts went to the unborn baby and its helpless fate. I started to think about its reason or purpose for having been conceived. My mind would go from one extreme - abortion and a convenient way human lives are destroyed - to the other end of the spectrum - a new life into this world with the potential to blossom and become a wonderful and creative human being. This painting tells of how every single human life does have and always will have a purpose and a reason to come into this world. Whether we choose to accept it or not, to believe it or not, the life force (spirit, essence, soul, creative intelligence, mana, etc.) that always inhabits a human embryo - from before its conception to either its brief and fleeting existence or throughout an entire lifetime span - has expressly manifested and "crossed-over" into the physical world to fulfill its own design and cosmic journey, regardless of what we do or don’t do with a human life or why we choose to do it. On that particular morning, this is what I painted.</image:caption>

In Spanish and Italian, the words “girasol” and “girasole” respectively, mean “the spinning sun.” A sunflower is truly a colorful mirror that reflects and reminds us of how relative everything is in this universe that we call home. It is said that we “find God in the details.” This flower is precisely that; a beautiful Microcosm within a magnificent Macrocosm. The painting then becomes a combined tribute to both the radiant, nurturing sun that we so often take for granted, and to our beautiful planet. My intention is to show the close interaction and interdependence of one with the other; much the same way that the blooming and growth of a flower depend on the sun’s light so does our planet and its “spinning dance-path” around the sun in order to ensure its continued existence. I have painted these two heavenly bodies in a simple image that celebrates aliveness, vitality, nourishment, colorfulness and the magical connectedness that we are privileged to witness and experience, day in and day out, when we either stop “spinning” to look at a flower or to simply look up at the sky.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. How lucky we are to be loved by other human beings. And equally so are we to have the capacity to love them. Very few things in life compare to the overwhelming energy, presence and emotional power experienced by two people immersed in mutual affection, acceptance, togetherness, discovery and admiration of each other’s basic need to love. This painting is an abstract representation of manifested, tangible desire to be in the company, both physical and spiritual, of another. I’d like to think that I have captured or frozen a moment when two people are, have been, and will continue to be engaged in a celebration of mutual Love. The colors merge seamlessly, one into the other, as a symbolic expression of unity and togetherness. I created the texture by carving on the surface, 2-way connecting lines that converge, manifest and disperse again to and from infinity, of which we all are part. I am also interested here in exploring, through visual inquiry, the multiple ways in which energy, spiritual, emotional and/or physical, is constantly in motion and how it manifests through the power of Love.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. Most of us have been programmed to act and respond to certain beliefs, values and ideals. We were born into a world wherein concepts, rules, guidelines, terms and conditions and many so-called goals, but not dreams, have already been pre-established for us to choose from and abide by. These notions have been ingrained into our collective psyche to such degree that we have resigned ourselves to a habitual form of thinking and to very limited possibilities. In so doing, we have become content and very numb to all the infinite options and choices available and to all the yet-to-be imagined potential which truly exists in the realm located “just outside” and beyond our “conditioned consciousness.” Organized religion is just one of those amazing software programs that have been carefully, strategically and meticulously designed and fed, gigabyte by gigabyte, into our consciousness and lifestyles. Century after century, one generation after the other, organized religion has instructed worshippers around the globe, through forced repetition, systematic indoctrination and well-planted fear, to believe in and react accordingly to external phenomena (as opposed to the inner God within us all) and to incomprehensible circumstances of biblical proportions that have nothing to do with people’s daily lives, their sense of self-worth or earthly core ideals. In other words, organized religion has succeeded in taking away our own sense of self-empowerment. Not anymore. Not for much longer... HOPE is a seed that when nurtured and watered, grows into a beautiful inner child that we are privileged to incubate and befriend throughout our entire lives. This painting pays tribute to the Christ-essence from all religions known to mankind that resides deep within our hearts. Regardless of what or whom we choose to believe in or to worship throughout our lifetime, HOPE and its amazing gift is time-less, without regard to origin or nationality, nor to cultural or ethnic background, creed or religious belief. Even before we were conceived and planted in our mother’s womb with the grace and the virtues of DNA, the creative Spirit that flows in and out of the cosmos lit the flame of hope and placed it gently within our being to be nurtured and built into an infinite source of inspiration. That flame can only be extinguished if we choose to do so. This image encompasses the tree of life – as symbolized by a cross – and the human figure and presence who is the only being that has the ability to embody and manifest truly amazing and spectacular deeds in the face of adversity, hardship, oppression and self-destructiveness.</image:caption>

Without a doubt, the enveloping, warming experience and glorious manifestation of Love are the most valuable gifts that we have ever bestowed upon one another. In my opinion, human kind is so very eager and, to some extent, so very desperate to “find” and to “feel” Love. The human race is a very lonely species. But loneliness is such a state that runs completely contrary to our nature, and it absolutely contradicts our purpose as a society ,as well as our innate desire to be with one another, as individuals. Perhaps the very notion of what “Love” is has been altered and truly misunderstood throughout history. Many centuries ago, somewhere, somehow and in some mysterious fashion, we were conditioned to believe that Love is something to be ”found”, to “fall into” or to be discovered and experienced under “certain conditions and circumstances.” Perhaps we have, generation after generation, resigned ourselves to believe that Love is a state of being which distinctively triggers, promotes and nurtures emotions, feelings and episodes filled with hues of romance, melancholy, sentimental urges and dramatic nostalgia. This painting tells of the innate human need to experience Love. The dove is representative of both the animal kingdom and of a state of purity. Of unaltered beingness. Instinctively, the dove knows this state and is able to experience Love unconditionally and within a realm where simplicity and openness abound. Such is our desperation and confusion, that we are willing to become like the bird in order to experience this gift and this extraordinary and divine force called Love. The texture that you see carved and etched into the surface of "Where Love Is" – in all angles and directions - is actually the following statement, LITERALLY CARVED OUT: “Only Love is real, the rest is an illusion.” I have also incorporated the four letters that make up the word “LOVE” - you can find them in the central section of the painting. So where then, is Love ?? ……We are all Love manifested. Right here, right now. We are a mother’s womb in which the seed and the immense potential of Love have been planted to be nurtured, experienced and shared with one another. Love is a synonym for compassion, hope, togetherness, acceptance, awareness, surrender and inspiration. And, while we move and pass briefly through our world and embark upon this wonder-filled journey of discovery called LIFE, it is necessary to always remember that, deep within ourselves, the place that we have come to know as our home is where LOVE resides. It’s Where LOVE Is.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. If electrical impulses that are sent from one neuron to another inside our brain trigger the mechanism that causes an idea or an image to manifest in our field of awareness, then this painting is a humble attempt to show a microscopic aspect of that amazing process. Most of us are constantly flooded with ideas and concepts that travel through a galaxy of realms inside our bodies and which remain completely unknown, unchartered but always magical. How the brain and the heart communicate with each other to insure that the rest of our system functions and excels moment to moment is an awesome, perplexing wonder to me !! The gift of imagination is a true blessing, and thanks to DNA and its divine blueprint, we are capable of conceiving infinite time-space-matter notions that, inherently, have the wonderful potential to manifest and give meaning to our brief existence. This image is an attempt to celebrate the joy and the privilege of imagination manifested.</image:caption>

After travelling to various cities in the eastern part of Germany, Vienna, Venice, Florence and Paris, I came home feeling so overwhelmed not only physically but also mentally, spiritually and artistically. All of my senses were then and continue to be liberated and deliciously SATURATED by the RICHNESS one comes to find at every corner in the old continent. This painting is about a feeling of nourishment borne of my experiences, encounters, sights, sounds, artful moments and above all, the people who crossed my path and entered my life during this journey through Europe. The flooding of my senses and all the art I was able to witness allow me to continue evolving and exploring for the truth and the beauty that both art and people make possible.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. I am reminded of the way Native-American indigenous people as well as the Mayans, the Aztecs and the Incas - to name a few - were manipulated, brain-washed, enslaved, exploited and forced to see themselves and their unique culture and lifestyles in a completely different way to what they believed in. Throughout history, human beings have been inevitably but strategically subjected to and required to process “available” information that is supposed to match pre-programmed expectations, conform to other people’s beliefs and demands, and to convincingly please our well-conditioned, earthly, tangible senses. Does this sound like a wordy way to describe “brain-washing” ??? Well, yes, but it goes far beyond that notion. It may be difficult to accept, but for the past few thousand years - if not longer - we have allowed our senses to be shaped and domesticated as specifically instructed, so they can process information in pre-determined, consumer-tailored ways and means through which it is spoon-fed and, more often than not, force-fed to us. Whatever looks like an established fact, an age-old custom or tradition or a seemingly civilized concept, we have had to accept and react accordingly to the software’s instruction-manual in order to meet societal expectations and conform to the status quo, such as all the tradition-rich, nostalgia-filled, for-the-sake-of-history examples set by the previous generation. Over and over and over again. Our upbringing and the socio-cultural atmosphere in which we are raised greatly - no, I correct myself - HUGELY influences our behavior, sense of self, long-term identity; they do determine which mental models we will carry with us for the rest of our lives and which models will impact our beliefs and actions. Without questioning much about their true meaning or challenging their source, the how’s, why’s and who’s, we grew up listening to concepts, notions, laws and herd-oriented guidelines and have also spent a zillion years observing our parents, teachers and elders - generation after generation - while cloning their behavior, digesting their beliefs and wisdom-wrapped advice and learning to adopt countless ways to please them and to acknowledge their contribution to the enrichment of our future lives. I am not suggesting here that we have been lied to. All of these social and cultural rituals sound reasonable and valid. But I strongly believe that we have been misinformed and told, time and again, that there are no more options or possibilities available, no other alternatives to interpret one’s own concept of self, that our lives can and should only follow certain patterns and pathways unless we are willing to face the consequences of leading a life astray. This painting came about from the need to remind ourselves -here and now - and future generations not to allow the same “cultural and social” brain-washing to continue. In fact, we ourselves have the innate ability to stop this vicious cycle and re-program ourselves with appropriate software information designed to respond to highly individualized needs, wants, desires and dreams. And to listen to ourselves, our inner life-force, and to emphasize - more than anything else in this world - self-empowerment, self-esteem and Love.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. There is an undeniable charm about numbers. Yes, these are numbers that we all use to quantify and describe a specific value or meaning in any given conversation. We all know that historically and in many cultures around the world, numbers literally embody the foundation of precise value systems, specific passages, legendary tales, mysterious and sometimes undecipherable symbology that have yet to be fully understood. I am particularly fascinated by how we relate to the sheer presence and usage of numbers in our every-day lives. Numbers are, needless to say, a separate language unto itself with which we also communicate. They speak volumes about our own internal processes of associating symbols with meaning, their use and application, and what thoughts they evoke in our minds. The Fairytale of Six is such an image. When you look up closely, you will notice that the texture on this painting was created with carved, not painted, fish-like patterns and figures that appear to be swimming freely and joyfully. Painted on the upper-section, and as part of the background, are birds coming and going in all directions. Here I am interested in fusing and juxtaposing a marine element with a terrestrial or land-based element. Life as we know it originated in the ocean. And birds are just one small manifestation of how the journey of life itself has evolved, from the depths of the ocean to the openness of the infinite sky. Number six (6) lends itself to the creation of endless images and stories. The fluid, organic lines that make up its shape as “number six,” evoke in my mind so much creative energy, including the graceful flight of a seagull and, simultaneously, the effortless, weightless presence of an aquatic creature that swims freely as if doing perfectly synchronized, acrobatic exercises under water. The curved line in the bottom portion of the six forms a tunnel-like void that brings the viewer into a realm of possibilities, into the unknown and, very likely, into our very own and imaginary fairytale</image:caption>

There are certain images or visualepisodes - in addition to amazing, extraordinary experiences - that occur in one’s lifetime which go on to register and will remain indelible and forever memorable in one’s mind, heart and soul. This painting celebrates one of those visual delights. Most artists would admit that working with a live, nude female model is one of the greatest privileges; a beautiful artistic thrill and a wonderful opportunity to create art from live and direct observation. But in this case, I was inspired and deliciously motivated by the sight of a fully-clothed woman, any woman, who happens to be on her way to work early in the morning. She is wearing a business suit with a knee-length skirt and dress shoes. She is tall and has very attractive legs. This woman is on a schedule and her body language is that of a busy, ambitious and dynamic person. Stay with me: As she is about to get in her car, she motions to sit herself down on the front seat while her legs are still outside the car, feet planted on the ground. It is this precise moment - when she lifts her lower legs and feet off the ground, while keeping her feet close together, and then moves to position herself inside the car – that I have frozen and symbolically painted. There is a "Je ne sais quoi," a "something" so appealing yet undecipherable, so seductive and in my opinion, so beautiful and fascinating about this simple and mundane little scene, a moment frozen in time - like a tear drop in a rain storm. Don’t ask me what or why. It is difficult to put it into words. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, here you have it !!. Enjoy !!</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. There are so many things and aspects about ourselves - human beings - that, in my opinion, continue to be entirely unknown, unresolved, or unexplained. You would think that after being on this planet for a few million years, we would have it down to a science. The world is full of information that is constantly being revised, updated and discovered. Surely more than one lifetime is required to absorb, analyze, record and store this relentless bombardment of data into our system’s capabilities. But this is certainly no excuse to justify the lack of dissemination of vital information to be given to the masses, generation after generation, time and again, one century after the other. What exactly are we missing? A millennium’s-worth of information, at the very least. To begin with, children need to be shown at an early age how spectacular, precious and fragile life is. They need to be taught self-esteem, self-confidence, self-empowerment along with history, biology and math. Elementary schools’ curriculums around the world need to include classes such as “Life 101,” “Beginning Appreciation of Our Own Bodies,” “Exploration of the Human Brain,” “What is Sharing and How to Use It,” “What is Friendship and How to Share It,” “Who Are Human Beings, Really?,” “Appreciation of Nature 101,” “Appreciation of Our Planet 101,” “Is the Purpose of Life to Become Money-Rich or Genuinely Love-Abundant?,” and so many, many others. This painting reminds us that although we have made remarkable progress throughout our brief history in the universe, we have so much more to discover and understand about ourselves and our place in the cosmos. This painting is also a reminder that all the answers to the age-old questions we have been asking ourselves are to be found precisely within ourselves, in the unexplored galaxies of our soul, body and mind. And so we continue to evolve, I hope, with the expectation that sooner rather than later, our dreams and wishes for a peaceful, joyful and infinite existence will become a palpable reality.</image:caption>

Not only did it signal the end of a millennium for most linear-time-conscious minds, but it was also the year when a local art gallery in Paris (located two blocks from Notre Dame) invited me to exhibit my artwork. What a privilege and an indescribable thrill !! Two months later, the very prestigious Society of French Artists, based in Paris, invited me to exhibit my artwork at an annual art group show located just a stone-throw away from the Eiffel Tower. I was also fortunate enough to enroll in an art academy. For several months during the Fall of 2000, I learned a few techniques on engraving, etching and printmaking at the academy. Paris is a magical city and a huge source of inspiration for the senses, the heart and the spirit. It is a place that embodies the legacy of amazing creations, history and tradition. Paris is the quintessential bridge that connects my reverence and passion for art-making with the lives and times, trials and tribulations of some of my favorite painters and sculptors that ever lived. The monumental opportunity to live, study, and exhibit my artwork in Paris proved to be an a-m-a-z-i-n-g experience. Life in Paris contributed to the on-going incubation of a giant cocoon within my heart filled with creativity and imagination. Paris was and continues to be a very special dream come true; This particular journey and time there generated innumerable ideas, unforgettable experiences, lifelong friendships and several paintings like this one</image:caption>

It’s difficult to say how it all starts. Sometimes ones desire or need to express and manifest is so overwhelming that inspiration kicks in and so many things converge all at once. I am no creator, but I am privileged to say and feel that I am part of a wonderful process called creation. Human beings are, in my opinion, the ultimate creation. I celebrate this uniqueness about us. That which gives us the distinction to be inspired to create and to imagine so many possibilities. If you think about it, anything that our hearts and minds can imagine, can be manifested in one way or another. It is such a powerful ability and quite a gift. This painting is about the fundamental need that an artist always has to express, to share and to believe in endless possibilities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Profoundly Alive • Profondément Vivant 20" x 32" - oil pastels with a hand-carved texture SOLD - Private Collection, Los Angeles, USA Available in Limited Edition Prints "Reminder: LIFE is NOT a Rehearsal". I clearly remember how unprepared I felt after reading this truism. This LIFE IS, in fact, the REAL thing; and NOT a rehearsal. So often, we take for granted what LIFE has to offer us. We must realize our potential and explore our capabilities within THIS LIFE and NOW. I believe that we are LIFE being aware of itself. LIFE is omnipresent. We swim in LIFE and drink of it, and we watch it passing by. Indeed, possessing the gift of LIFE is a monumental privilege. Regardless of our choices, our motivations, or the fruits of our efforts and beliefs, we have been given a fantastic opportunity to BE, become, and transcend; to share our awareness of such an experience during our brief but precious encounter in space-time existence. Simply stated, the continuity that pervades LIFE is both an amazing and overwhelming experience to process and digest. We are all so very unwittingly interconnected with one another; we are connected to every little thing in existence, be it living or not. This painting was especially nourished and inspired by the Love and appreciation that I feel for my brother Harold, and for LIFE itself. Harold is one of my biggest heroes; I am so proud to be his younger sibling and good buddy. Here, I have created the feeling of movement and depth, by careful manipulation of light and dark tones, to portray a noble sperm cell swimming deeply through an ocean rife with color while an infinite web of ”Living Matter” floats by. In the infinite cycle of this magical journey, it seems that, time and again, we always return to our metaphysical birthplace - right back to the very birthplace of LIFE itself.</image:caption>

<image:title>On the Road to Paris - Memories of You</image:title>
<image:caption>Memories of You Souvenirs (de toi) • Te Recuerdo 20" x 32" - oil pastels with a hand-carved texture Available in Limited Edition Prints How lucky we are to have the gift of memory, of remembrance of things past and experiences lived or missed. I am not aware of any other living creatures on this planet who are equally endowed with the ability not only to remember, but equally to associate past events with the ongoing flow of life, with their probable consequences in the future, and to draw important and meaningful information about how we do things, the decisions we make and what behavior or attitude we assume before, during and after said experiences. This painting is inspired by the spiritual, mental and emotional presence that a person is capable of creating and the indelible marks or scars left in our lives by that person. Human beings are always looking to be in the company of someone - at least I think so - because we need to feel accepted, validated, recognized and loved. Throughout our lives, people come in and out of our paths and as a result, great and not-so-great experiences are mutually shared and recorded permanently in our field of awareness. It is those encounters and relationships experienced between two people that this painting celebrates. I believe that regardless of how difficult or painful past relationships may have been, we are always learning and enriching ourselves and our separate and/or joint lives by way of all the opportunities that come about when we interact with one another. This is also true and greatly enhanced when we experience the exact opposite - that is joy, harmony, respect, love, etc. It is then when we also learn and grow into oneness and loving communion with our loved ones or a significant other. What is triggered then are memories, the emotional heart is awakened and the nostalgia-filled section of our brain is activated to recall a specific person and/or an event that emerges from our “stored files” in our system and, within fractions of a second, we are flooded and bombarded with relived sensations, colors, aromas, words said and unsaid, and everything else that we choose to remember. And that which we never truly forget.</image:caption>

An ongoing experience of the known and the unknown. It is perhaps a carefully orchestrated clashing of microcosms within macrocosms. To me, the purpose of life is a life of purpose. It seems as if every time we start believing in something and set out to do it, to accomplish it or to fulfill a thousand dreams, the universe generously becomes a silent accomplice opening the way for us to aim further and higher, to always persevere and to put to the test our will, our faith and our vision. This painting tells of the outer and inner realms through which our dreams and desires pass and evolve. Both, the hand-carved texture and the light seen here work together to create an optical effect filled with movement, depth of color and space, visual intensity and a touch of mystery.</image:caption>

<image:title>On the Road to Paris - Alone and in the Nude</image:title>
<image:caption>Alone and in the Nude • Seule et Nue 20" x 32" - oil pastels with a hand-carved texture SOLD - Private Collection, Paris, France Available in Limited Edition Prints There are times, when I paint, that I am very eager to simply play and experiment with colors. Just colors and nothing else. And almost always two colors simply show up in my brain and insist on being part of my conversation with the creative process. These colors manifest themselves and dominate my thoughts, triggering the desire to create, to be playful and to explore the realms of imagination. Such is the case with this painting. There are two predominant colors that I used to establish the foundational layer which in turn, gives life to other complimentary colors. A few years ago, I met a girl from Italy who loves to dance alone while completely naked. She feels happiest and most free when dancing with herself and in the nude. So here, there appears a female figure in the background, behind the bamboo shoots with her head thrown back and gracefully aware of her nude body and her own solitude. This image is a tribute to both, the states of mind and body that bring so much joy into our lives when we can allow ourselves to simply "be," and to a beautiful Italian girl who inspired me to use color and movement to celebrate a fun and wonderfully liberating memory.</image:caption>

<image:title>On the Road to Paris - The Blue Door at the Mission</image:title>
<image:caption>The Blue Door at the Mission La Porte Bleue de la Mission 32" x 40" - oil pastels with a hand-carved texture Available in Limited Edition Prints Our planet is our church, our temple. The ideal place, in my humble opinion and with all due respect to tradition and organized religion, to worship and carry out a very intimate, personal conversation with God is where one is, wherever one happens to be at, under whatever circumstances one may be, regardless of the location, surroundings or whether they are appropriate or not. This painting speaks of the divine presence that exists everywhere, inside and outside of ourselves regardless of where, when or whether or not we choose to acknowledge it. This is a reminder that Light (what I also refer to as the “divine source”) is constantly manifesting all over and around us. It filters through and travels in every known and imagined dimension. I believe that our planet, our world, provides us with the perfect stage to acknowledge and celebrate the presence of the divine. I have used the Santa Barbara Mission as a model and reference to create this painting. Most established or institutionalized religions dictate that prayer, worship and spiritual communication with God or the corresponding deity, must be carried out and performed in certain places, structures or buildings where people usually congregate to do so. What I hope to accomplish here is to show that this ”Light” reveals itself in all space-time realms, is infinitely present and requires no rituals, offerings, promises or pacts from any of us to enter our awareness.</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. I have yet to understand much about Abstract Art. Unquestionably, it is full of fantastic imagery, yet it puzzles me, and it is often very frustrating for me to figure it out. Without a doubt, art is very subjective: art and its “whatever-it-is” meaning lay in the eye of the beholder… Like many other art lovers, I have spent countless hours at museums and galleries, desperately trying to decipher works of art that seem to will a shroud of mystery upon their secrets. After all my time reflecting upon them, I have come away with little or no understanding of so called “Abstract Art.” Still, I strongly believe that the value of abstraction is not so much about figuring out its intended message, hidden clues, figurative imagery or perhaps the obvious characterization of “this symbol” or “that concept.” In my humble view, no mater how abstract, Art speaks to sensations, visual manifestations within our own being, and new sensorial experiences captured and frozen in space and time for our mutual benefit and enjoyment. How the brain processes images and visual sensations that cannot be readily associated, recognized nor understood will often lead to the actual experience of “Abstract Art.” Naturally, critics, scholars and historians may pronounce more profound and diverse theories upon this subject than I, and surely, far more complex interpretations of what it really means. Here I have painted a woman lying down on her back. The observer’s point of view is at a bed-level, up close to her. The spectator obviously gets the benefit of a very erotic viewpoint. This woman's head, arms and upper body are not visible. In the foreground, her legs are spread out and a portion of her breasts rest in the middle of the painting. The Island Fruit is at the vortex where her legs meet her hips, right in the middle section of the painting. Long live abstract art !!</image:caption>

No usage is granted without permission. Most heart attacks occur on Mondays. Funny but tragic, isn’t it? Time, as we know it, is nothing but fragmented eternity. This is nothing new, of course. It is extremely difficult - though possible - to imagine this life - the so called existence that we live day in and day out - without time, without our interpretation and attachment to it. It is obvious that our society needs some type of tool or mechanism with which we can give some chronological sense to what we do, how we do it and “when” we do it. It is “time” and the passage of it that give us - biologically, culturally, emotionally and of course, socially - our sense of history and development both collectively and individually: it also provides us with a frame of reference against which we can draw observations and comparisons, trace roots and ancestry, discover unknown and amazing data about our evolutionary process, and establish links with the past, thereby giving meaning to the present and hope for the future. Listen to these very words you are now reading: I am already fragmenting reality, both yours and mine !! In other words, time allows us to write our own story, His-story, Her-story, Our story.</image:caption>
